WHEREAS: International Day of Persons with Disabilities was first proclaimed on December 3, 1992, and it is a global celebration that acknowledges the many achievements persons with disabilities have made; and
WHEREAS: barriers can take a variety of forms and include the physical environment, information and communications, legislation or policy and societal attitudes and discrimination. When barriers to inclusion are removed, people with disabilities are empowered to participate fully in the political, social, economic and cultural life which benefits the entire community; and
WHEREAS: the observance of the Day is an opportunity for the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury to make a renewed commitment to the fundamental principle that people living with a disability are entitled to the same rights as everyone else, in support to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; and
WHEREAS: the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury is committed to creating and maintaining an accessible and inclusive community and upholding the principles of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). We reaffirm our commitment to identify, prevent and remove barriers to equitable access and inclusion for persons with disabilities who live, work and visit the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: That His Worship Mayor James Leduc and Members of Council proclaim December 3, 2024, as International Day of Persons with Disabilities in the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury.
