Committees

Some committees are mandated to be in operation every year, while others are created by Town of BWG Council to run concurrent to the four-year term of office. Advisory​ committees provide recommendations, advice and information to Council, and carry out assigned responsibilities.

Appeals Tribunal

A quasi-judicial tribunal that hears appeals made under the Business Licensing By-law, Dog Control By-law and the Property Standards By-law.

Accessibility Advisory Committee

Mission

The Accessibility Advisory Committee is established to:

  • Provide advice and comments to Council and staff regarding the Town’s Accessibility Plan
  • Respond to Council’s requests for advice with respect to accessibility in Town services
  • Ensure the standards of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 are being met
  • Review plans for development under Section 41 of the Planning Act with respect to accessibility issues and advise of any concerns
  • Champion accessibility within the community

 

Term of Appointment

All citizen members of the Committee will hold office for a term that coincides with the term of Council, and remain in office until their successors are appointed.  When appointing members, consideration will be given to applicants that have not previously served on the Committee prior to those that have to ensure opportunities are available for new applicants as well as retaining dedicated existing members.  Persons appointed to Committees are appointed for such term as defined by Council, and by resolution, Council may rescind any appointment at any time.

Committee of Adjustment

The Committee of Adjustment is an independent body appointed by Council under authority granted by the Province through the Planning Act.  The purpose of this committee is to consider minor variances to the Town's Zoning By-law, consider alterations to legal non-conforming uses and grant consent approval for the severance of land.

Council Compensation Committee

The purpose of this Committee is to undertake a review of current levels of compensation paid to members of council and then present their recommendations to council for consideration for the 2022 to 2026 term and beyond.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory Committee 

Mission

This committee will build upon the work of the former Anti-Racism Advisory Committee and broaden its mandate to address inequities across marginalized communities and improve the sense of belonging, representation and security among all residents.

 

Term of Appointment

All citizen members of the Committee will hold office for a term that coincides with the term of Council, and remain in office until their successors are appointed.  When appointing members, consideration will be given to applicants that have not previously served on the Committee prior to those that have to ensure opportunities are available for new applicants as well as retaining dedicated existing members.  Persons appointed to Committees are appointed for such term as defined by Council, and by resolution, Council may rescind any appointment at any time.

Green Initiatives Advisory Committee 

Mission

This committee will focus on reviewing and providing advice regarding initiatives that support the environmental health of the Town along with the mental, physical and societal benefits for residents.

Heritage Committee 

Mission

The Heritage Committee is established to:

  • Promote public participation in heritage matters through public education, public relations and public participation
  • Provide advice respecting heritage preservation within the municipality to Council
  • Identify buildings, structures and land that are of historical or cultural significant to the municipality and recommend their designation to Council
  • In performing the above duties, conduct site investigations and undertake research in accordance with the provisions of the Ontario Heritage Act.

Holland Marsh Drainage System Joint Municipal Services Board

The Holland Marsh Drainage System Joint Municipal Service Board is a joint local board created by agreement with the Township of King and the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury. The Board consists of two residents of the Town of BWG and two residents of King Township who carry on farming practices within the Holland Marsh and one additional member of the public chosen by the board at-large and appointed by each municipality.  Four members of Council are also appointed: two from the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury and two from the Township of King.

 

The purpose of this Board is to carry out all the responsibilities of each municipality under the Drainage Act and to oversee and manage the Holland Marsh Drainage System.  This includes preparation of an annual business plan and reporting to the respective Councils.

Library Committee

The BWG Public Library Board is an independent body appointed by Council under authority granted by the Public Libraries Act and its regulations.  The Library Board is responsible for the provision of a free public library service that reflects the unique needs of the community. 

 

The Library Board is accountable to municipal Council and the budget is approved by Council annually.  Roles and responsibilities include strategic planning, policy making, financial responsibility and advocacy.  To serve on the Library Board you must be at least 18 years of age, a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada with the meaning of the Immigrant and Refugee Protection Act (Canada), a resident of the municipality and cannot be employed by the Library Board or municipality.

Strategic Initiatives Committee

Mission

This Committee is established to advise Council on two of its key strategic priorities: major infrastructure projects including implementation of the Community Centre Revitalization Master Plan; and, policy direction on traffic mitigation strategies and community safety efforts.

 

Term of Appointment

All members of the committee will hold office for a term that coincides with the term of Council, and remain in office until their successors are appointed.

 

Composition: 

This Committee is composed of all Members of Council and Chaired by Deputy Mayor Raj Sandhu. 

Youth Council Advisory Committee

Mission

The Youth Council Advisory Committee is established to create a platform for youth to engage in the municipal decision-making process by providing input on issues that interest and/or affect youth in the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury and to foster leadership development and a sense of belonging among youth residents. 

 

Term of Appointment

All youth members of the Committee will hold office for an initial one year term (may coincide with the school year) and remain in office until their successors are appointed.  When appointing members, consideration will be given to applicants that have not previously served on the Committee prior to those that have to ensure opportunities are available for new applicants as well as retaining dedicated existing members.  Persons appointed to Committees are appointed for such term as defined by Council, and by resolution.
