Committee Membership

Residents of Bradford West Gwillimbury are encouraged to g​et involved in helping the community by applying to serve as a volunteer on one of the Town's boards or committees. Applicants must be 18 or older, Canadian citizens and residents of BWG.

Some boards/committees are required by law to exist in all municipalities, while others are formed by Town Council to help achieve specific goals Committee members serve the same four-year term as Council; therefore, most committees advertise for new members only at the beginning of a term of Council. Occasionally there will be openings mid-term if a member leaves a committee.​

Police Services Board
Once the application period is closed, submissions will be reviewed by Council and candidates will be contacted. 
All applicants should be aware that the information submitted may be discussed by Council at a public meeting during the recruitment process.
The Role of Committee Members
  • Committee members attend regular committee ​meetings, which are usually held once a month in the evening. Members are required to attend regularly, as no decisions can be made without the majority of members present.
  • Members will also be required to attend other functions such as Council meetings, and to conduct work on behalf of the committee outside of regular meetings.
  • Committee members bring their own insight and experience to the group, as well as conduct the hands-on work required to achieve the mandate of their committee/board​.
  • Each committee or board has its own mandate and terms of reference. Many committees involve tasks such ​as budget approval, business planning, policy making and advocacy. 
  • Committees generally include members of Council in addition to members of the public. Members are considered community leaders in the area that their committee/board pertains to.
  • Committee recommendations are provided to Council for consideration.
  • Members are volunteers, and are therefore unpaid. Some of the mandatory boards do provide an honorarium.
