St. John Ambulance Week
June 19-25, 2023
WHEREAS: In 1883, Quebec City was the first Canadian branch to teach first aid courses and by 1892, St. John grew to be a national organization with 12 branches teaching first aid from coast-to-coast; and
WHEREAS: Today, St. John Ambulance operates in more than 300 communities across Canada with over 10,000 volunteers who provide over one million hours of community service per year; and
WHEREAS: 2023 marks the 82nd anniversary of the establishment of the Barrie Simcoe Muskoka Branch of St. John Ambulance; and
WHEREAS: The Barrie Simcoe Muskoka Branch of St. John Ambulance has been serving the community since 1941 and fulfilling its mission to enable Canadians to improve their health, safety, and quality of life by providing training and community service; and
WHEREAS: In 2022, 49 Medical First Response volunteers attended 73 events, treated 60 casualties, and contributed over 5,500 hours of volunteer service; and
WHEREAS: In 2022, 47 Therapy Dog Handlers and their dogs contributed to over 2,700 hours of volunteer service, completing 659 in-person and virtual visits to 20 facilities including seniors’ residences, hospitals, and schools.
WHEREAS: In 2022, 5 Youth volunteers learned about becoming better citizens, while developing leadership skills; and
WHEREAS: In 2022, 8 Car Seat Safety Team members educated 38 parents and caregivers on the proper way to install car seats and contributed 566 volunteer hours; and
WHEREAS: In 2022, the 123 volunteers of the Branch provided the community with approximately 11,570 hours of volunteer services.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: That His Worship Mayor James Leduc and Members of Council proclaim June 19-25, 2023, as St. John Ambulance Week in the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury.
