St. John Ambulance Week

June 2024 

WHEREAS: In 1883, Quebec City was the first Canadian branch to teach first aid courses and by 1892, St. John grew to be a national organization with 12 branches teaching first aid from coast-to-coast; and

WHEREAS: Today, St. John Ambulance operates in more than 300 communities across Canada with over 10,000 volunteers who provide over one million hours of community service per year; and

WHEREAS: 2024 marks the 83rd anniversary of the establishment of the Barrie Simcoe Muskoka Branch of St. John Ambulance; and

WHEREAS: The Barrie Simcoe Muskoka Branch of St. John Ambulance has been serving the community since 1941 and fulfilling its mission to enable Canadians to improve their health, safety, and quality of life by providing training and community service; and

WHEREAS: In 2023, 41 Medical First Response volunteers attended 83 events, treated 61 casualties, and contributed over 4,700 hours of volunteer service; and 

WHEREAS: In 2023, 66 Therapy Dog Handlers and their dogs contributed to over 6,400 hours of volunteer service, completing 1,973 in-person visits to facilities including seniors’ residences, hospitals, and schools. 

WHEREAS: In 2023, 7 Youth volunteers learned about becoming better citizens, while developing leadership skills; and 

WHEREAS: In 2023, 10 Car Seat Safety Team members educated 88 parents and caregivers on the proper way to install car seats and contributed 618 volunteer hours; and

WHEREAS: In 2023, the 128 volunteers of the Branch provided the community with approximately 12,500 hours of volunteer services.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: That His Worship Mayor James Leduc and Members of Council proclaim June 24-29, 2024, as St. John Ambulance Week in the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury.
