Proclamation
Black History Month, February 2023
WHEREAS:
Black History Month is a time to learn about the stories and many important contributions of local Black Canadians to the settlement, growth, and development of Simcoe County, and about the diversity of Black communities in Canada and their importance to the history of this country; and
WHEREAS:
The United Nations proclaimed 2015-2024 the Decade for people of African Descent, an important step in the international community recognizing that people of African descent represent a distinct group whose human rights must be advocated for and protected; and
WHEREAS:
The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury encourages people throughout our community to recognize Black History Month as an opportunity to embrace diversity and foster belonging and inclusion; and
WHEREAS:
During Black History Month, Canadians celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Black Canadians who have and continue to do so much to make Canada the culturally diverse nation it is today; and
WHEREAS:
Council of the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury unequivocally states that Black Lives Matter and supports the eradication of systemic racism in our community; and
WHEREAS:
Council is committed to taking the necessary steps to eradicate racism and acknowledges that it must take a leadership role along with other community partners and public agencies in the effort to end discrimination. On this day, we proudly raise and fly our local Anti Racism Flag, thoughtfully designed and created by Impact Youth.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That His Worship Mayor James Leduc and Members of Council proclaim February 2023 as BLACK HISTORY MONTH in the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury.

The flag-raising will take place on Wednesday, February 1 at 5:00 pm (outside)
at the Court House Courtyard - 57 Holland St. E.
