Council 2010-2014

ROLE:
Town Council is the governing body of the municipality. Council functions as the law maker and staff administer the laws of the municipality.

"224.  It is the role of Council, 
(a)     to represent the public and to consider the well-being and  interest of the municipality;
(b)     to develop and evaluate the policies and programs of the municipality;
(c)     to determine which services the municipality provides;
(d)     to ensure that administrative policies, practices and procedures, and controllership policies are in place to implement the decisions of Council;
(d.1)  to ensure the accountability and transparency of the operations of the municipality, including the activities of the senior management of the municipality; 
(e)     to maintain the financial integrity of the municipality;
(f)      to carry out duties of Council under this or any other Act."

FUNCTION:
Council is responsible for formulating Town policy and ensuring that such policies are implemented and administered efficiently. Council members have a responsibility to the citizens for the conduct of local affairs. Council can act only on matters for which the province has given it responsibility through legislation such as the Municipal Act or Planning Act.

MEETINGS:
The Mayor, who is the Head of Council, has the authority to call special meetings of Council. Also, if a majority of Council members request a special meeting may be held. There must be a quorum of Council members present in order to legally transact business at any meeting of Council. Five (5) members constitutes a quorum. Matters are decided by a majority vote of the quorum.
